Slavery through loans

I've often wondered about the IMF which hands out huge loans to countries and expects these countries to pay back these loans plus interest! The first mistake is that the country shouldn't have accepted these loans, but I'm sure a little corruption can go a long way... Here's an elightening interview (mp3, 45 minutes into it) and the text from a former international banker. It's not about the IMF, but here's a snippet.
We've built the largest empire in the history of the world. It's been done over the last 50 years since World War II with very little military might, actually. It's only in rare instances like Iraq where the military comes in as a last resort. This empire, unlike any other in the history of the world, has been built primarily through economic manipulation, through cheating, through fraud, through seducing people into our way of life, through the economic hit men. I was very much a part of that. [John Perkins]
Perkins also wrote Confessions of an Economic Hit Man which I might even buy. Listening to his interview was very depressing, but also hopeful. He says we can also turn it around and make the loans work for good.
